Brewing news Bulgaria: Kamenitza AD brewery fined for river pollution

Bulgarian beer producer Kamenitza joint-stock company will pay a penalty for polluting a river near the southern Bulgarian city of Haskovo. The fine, which will be in accordance with Bulgaria's environment protection law, will vary between BGN3,000 and BGN5,000, Tanya Georgieva from Darik News reported August 08.

The regional inspectorate for water and environment protection decided to slap the penalty after a chemical analysis of river samples showed serious damages.

All the fish in the river died in early August as a result of malfunction in Kamenitza's water purification station. The company claims it has already improved its wastewater purification technology.

Kamenitza AD, owned by the world's biggest brewer by volume InBev, sold 200,410 hectoliters in June 2006.
