EU: Malting barley balance and market situation, according to latest figures

The malting barley balance is less tight than feared earlier in the campaign. Maltsters in France, South Germany and the Czech Republic had to select their receivals very carefully. There is still a risk that some lots will lose their germinative capacity later in winter or spring, but France (winter barley), Denmark and the U.K. have a large surplus of malting barley.

France shipped around 140,000 tonnes to China, Denmark 75,000 tonnes to South Africa and Colombia. Demand from outside the EU will be small after the good harvests of Russia and now of Australia.
