Barley news USA: USDA market projections for MY 2005/2006

USDA decreased their estimate of U.S. barley production this month by 25 million bushels to 212 mbu, the lowest production since 1936, according to Idaho Barley Commission. Beginning stocks were lowered by 1 mbu to 128 mbu and domestic feed usage was lowered by 20 mbu to 80 mbu, resulting in a 4 mbu cut in U.S. barley ending stocks to 111 mbu. World barley production was decreased by nearly 1 MMT this month to 133.6 MMT, due to smaller crops in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

According to another report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS), the average barley yield was at 64.8 bushels, per acre is 4.8 bushels less than that of 2004. The harvested barley area is estimated at 3.28 million acres, down 19 percent from last year, and the lowest since 1980, This year's U.S. barley production is the lowest since 1936.

The U.S. barley area planted, area harvested and production values are down from last year in the 13 biggest barley-producing states, the report said. However, this year's U.S. barley yield is the second highest on record, and Colorado and Maryland had record high barley yields this year

Consistent with USDA report, world barley production is expected to decrease 12.7% to 133.6 MMT. US production is expected to decrease by 24.2% to 4.6 MMT.

World barley supplies are projected to decrease by 5.6% to 165.2 MMT. US supplies are projected to decrease by 14.9% to 7.4 MMT.

World barley trade is estimated to decrease by 3.9% to 16.2 MMT. US exports are expected to decrease 60% to 300 MMT.

World barley consumption is pegged to decrease by 1.9% to 140.7 MMT. US usage projected to decrease by 15.5% to 4.8 MMT.

World barley carryover stocks are projected to decrease 22.5% to 24.5 MMT. US carryout is projected to decrease by 13.9% to 2.4 MMT
