Brazil, Sao Paulo: Brazilian brewery AmBev has bought all 242,000 tonnes of barley produced in Brazil's southern region, Gazeta Mercantil Invest News mentioned on January 18, 2005. This season's production is 17% higher than in the previous season (201,000 tonnes). According to the company, this rise is a result of the program to promote the barley cultivation in the region. The program includes, besides the guarantee of a minimum price higher than the one paid for wheat, the training of agriculturists. The company has paid some R $ 400 per tonne of top quality barley, while a tonne of wheat is sold at R $ 354.
