Germany: Number of breweries increases last year
In spite of a constantly shrinking market during the last several years the number of breweries in Germany keeps growing, Deutscher Brauerbund said earlier this week.
Last year, 16 new breweries opened their doors in Germany thus bringing the total breweries operating in the country to 1,408.
According to the brewers union, by 2020 the number may exceed 1500.
The number of German breweries is growing thanks to the populations growing demand for craft beer and especially beer with new and unusual taste and aroma profiles even though Pils still accounts for more than half of the nations total beer sales.
Last year Germany consumed 79 mln hl a record low, industry representatives reported. The nation is the worlds fourth-largest beer maker after China, the US, and Brazil.
