Brewing news Russia: Beer market expected to grow 8-9pct in 2006

A 8-9 pct increase in the Russian beer market is forecasted in 2006, reported to journalists the Chairman of the Russian Brewers Association, Victor Piatko, Russian Beerunion announced on December 14. “Previously, we expected a 5-6 pct increase, but it appeared to be above ", - he said.

The reasons for a more active increase in the market, in the opinion of V. Piatko could be an uncommonly warm summer in some regions of the country and an improvement in the population’s welfare permitting to switch from strong alcohol to the lighter alcoholic beverages, like wine and beer. “The market crisis for strong alcohol did not have essential influence on our market, by the degree of its influence on the beer market I would place this factor on 3rd place ", - he emphasized.

In his opinion, in the following year the rates of the market’s increase will be substantially lower, than in 2006, and in the next 3 years it will grow with an average of 3 pct per year. “In 2009 the Russia beer market capacity will reach 107 million hectolitres and will become the 4th largest in the world”, - he noted. - We will approach 85-90 l consumption per person/year, depending on the level of the population’s welfare and the correlation between vodka and beer prices ". In Russia it is consumed 65 l of beer per person/year now.

“The beer consumption approached the maximum levels in Saint Petersburg, somewhat behind are the Ural region of Russia and Moscow, Siberian and Far-Eastern regions, the smallest consumption of beer being noted in the South of the country, - V.Piatko added.

According to him, 5 most important brewery companies are producing more than 90 pct of the entire beer production in Russia.

According to the Rosstata, in 2005 the production of beer in Russia grew 6.5 pct and reached 892 millions hl. In 2004 it was produced 842 million hl, 11.5 pct more than in 2003.
