Brewing news UK: Suffolk-based Green King has taken over Hardys & Hanson, the last major brewery in Nottinghamshire in a £270 million deal

Greene King bought the Kimberly firm Hardys and Hansons and more than 200 East Midlands pubs in a £270 million deal, BBc released September 05.

Hardys employed 140 people at its Kimberley plant, and 1,200 people signed a petition opposing the sale.

Senior management at Hardys and Hansons said earlier they would try to impress upon the new owners the value of the existing staff and products.

Shareholder and member of the Nottingham Campaign for Real Ale Andrew Ludlow had opposed the move. He said: "It's a very sad day. The overall result is that the company will become a part of Greene King.

"What we must now look towards is trying to persuade Greene King that the beers are maintained and the brewing is kept in Nottingham."

Hardys & Hansons plc is a pub retailer, wholesaler and integrated brewer. It operates both managed and tenanted outlets primarily in the East Midlands. The estate constitutes modern pub restaurants as well as traditional and community pubs.

Operating a sizeable estate of over 250 pubs, it sells the highest quality food and drinks, including its own locally brewed ales.

Traditional techniques and natural ingredients are used in the brewing process, combined with modern quality control methods to produce Hardys & Hansons Olde Trip, COOL, DARK, Best Bitter and Mild as well as a variety of guest ales.

Hardys & Hansons own public houses mostly in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire and employs around 2,000 people.

Greene King has operated pubs and brewing for over 200 years. Greene King has grown steadily from its base in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk to become a leading pub retailer and brewer. Greene King’s businesses, Pub Company, Pub Partners and Brewing Company, each have a major role to play within the Greene King estate.

Greene King brews, sales and distributes quality range of ales and beers, including four of the country's best-known cask brands – Greene King IPA, Abbot Ale, Old Speckled Hen and Ruddles County.
