UK: Maidstone's Albion brought back to life by refurbishment
The Royal Albion, a 15th century pub in Maidstone has reopened following a £170,000 refurbishment by Britain's oldest brewer Shepherd Neame.
Shepherd Neame president Robert Neame official reopened the pub on Tuesday 28 March, joined by Fremlin Walk's centre manager Mark Martin who pulled the 'first' pint. Veronica Wiseman accepted a cheque from Shepherd Neame for £200 of behalf the Kent Air Ambulance, the pub's nominated charity.
The pub, which is situated in the heart of the town near Maidstone museum and the new Fremlin Walk shopping centre, has been completely renovated and decorated with a stylish traditional feel. A comfortable, welcoming atmosphere has been created by relocating the bar and making a central fireplace the main feature of the pub. New toilets with disabled facilities have been added and new kitchen equipment installed.
Licensee Sharon Wardell, who started at the pub at the end of February said, "The pub has loads of potential and I've got plenty of ideas for events to really get us back up and running in time for the busy summer months." The Royal Albion is now serving food and has a special 'grazing' menu including olives, breaded mozzarella, chicken pieces, garlic bread and ale battered onion rings for friends to share.
