Barley news USA: Barley harvests in comparison with forecasts

The American barley harvest in 2005 is forecast at 237 million bushels, down 3% from the July forecast and 15% below 2004, as of the latest USDA crop estimates. Based on conditions from first of August, producers expect to harvest an average of 68.2 bushels per acre, less 1.8 bushels from July and less 1.2 bushels in comparison with last year. Harvest area, is of 3.47 million acres . This is less with 14% in comparison with 2004 but unchanged from last month.

Due to hot, dry weather crop forecasts were down from last month in most States. Only Washington, Pennsylvania and Virginia of the 16 largest-producing States had increases in forecasted yield and production from July and only Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia are the single States which exceed the production from last year.
