Brewing news USA, IL: Rock Island Brewing Companys last day to be Sunday, December 17

Terry Tilka, owner of Rock Island Brewing Company and staple of nightlife in the Quad Cities, is retiring after working 50 years in the bar, restaurant and nightclub business, WQAD reported on December 6.

After plenty of discussions with family, friends, past and present employees, its time to call it a career, Tilka said in a press release.

In addition to his departure, the Rock Island Brewing Company, also known as RIBCO, will be closing its doors. Tilka said in an email to News 8 that the business's last day will be Sunday, Dec. 17.

Its been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this community for over 50 years, Tilka said in the release. Im proud of my children that Ive raised here in the QC, Im proud of the work weve done, and Im proud of the music and entertainment weve brought to the area. Thank you for all of your support, and last but not least, I want to thank all of the people that Ive worked with in this community, my employees both past and present, including all three of my children who have all worked for me at some point in their lives.

Tilka's career has spanned across the Quad Cities area, starting in the 70s when he attended St. Ambrose University and bartended full-time. In 1978, at just 21 years old, Tilka purchased Glynn's Tap in Bettendorf, which was later renamed O'Meara's Pub after his mother's maiden name.

He then opened another location in Davenport, Pat McGuire's, and Dubuque Street Brewing Company in Iowa City. His next venture in 1979 would be opening RIBCO and 2nd Avenue Dance Club in Rock Island.

According to the press release about his retirement, Tilka helped bring musicians and other talent to downtown Rock Island, creating a multitude of special events for the community.

And that's exactly what he's doing on RIBCO's last day. Starting at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17, punk rock bands The Queers and Running Man will take the stage for one last night of live music. Cover is $18 and the event is open to all ages.
