USA, Missouri: The beer industry has a $10.3 billion total economic impact on the state of Missouri and a $6.3 billion impact on Illinois, according to an annual study released Wednesday by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

In Missouri, the beer industry directly and indirectly impacts 76,000 jobs that pay wages of more than $2.7 billion a year. More than 21,000 jobs in Missouri that are directly impacted are in brewing, wholesaling and retail, and the jobs that are indirectly impacted include those in agriculture, services, construction, finance, insurance, real estate, manufacture, transportation, travel and wholesale.

The industry generated more than $1.3 billion in federal, state and local business and personal taxes and $88.3 million in consumption taxes.

With Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc.'s headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri ranks in the top five U.S. states with the largest economic impact of the industry. California saw a $22 billion economic impact, Texas had an $11.9 billion economic impact and Colorado had $10.6 billion economic impact.

The beer industry in Illinois directly and indirectly impacts 73,722 jobs that pay wages of more than $2.3 billion a year. The industry directly impacts 39,225 jobs that have an economic contribution of $2.2 billion. The beer industry generated $766 million in federal, state and local business and personal taxes and $261 million in consumption taxes.

Nationally, the industry impacts nearly 1.8 million jobs paying more than $54 billion in wages, contributing more than $162 billion a year to the U.S. economy. Since 2001, the industry has added more than 120,000 jobs and more than $7 billion in wages, the study showed.
