Barley news UK: Barley harvest up 6.6% versus 2021

Total cereal production in England increased by 9.4% to almost 21 million tonnes in 2022. Higher yields across all the main cereal crops in 2022 compared to 2021, more than offset a small decrease in the total cereal area. The prolonged dry conditions through summer led to an exceptional early harvest and lower than normal moisture content in the harvested crops, Defra said in its October report.

The provisional estimate of the 2022 English barley harvest is 5.2 million tonnes, an increase of 6.6% on 2021. This comprises a 20% increase in winter barley production partly offset by a 5% fall in spring barley.

Results are based on provisional results from the Cereal and Oilseed Rape Production Survey, a representative sample of cereal and oilseed rape growers across English regions and farm sizes. These early results are based on the valid responses from 1,299 farms (26% response rate), Defra said.
