Barley news Argentina: Barley crop estimated at 5 mln tonnes with really good outcome

According to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange estimates, the nation’s barley acreage in 2021/22 is seen at 1.15 mln ha, yield at 4.34 tonnes/ha, production at 5.0 mln tonnes (last year 3.9). Some estimates are even higher, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their February report.

Heat and dryness had some effect on the barley quality, grading and protein, but altogether the outcome is really good. The adverse La Nina climate is impacting later crops, viz. maize, much more.

Exporters fixed licences for shipments of 1.9 mln tonnes of feed and 0.55 mln tonnes of malting barley. The malting barley demand forecast is: domestic 1.1 mln tonnes, export 1.2 mln. Exports will go to South America (No. 1 Brazil), but in this special year 45,000 tonnes have already been sold the U.S., and one or two panamax vessels to the EU. Feed barley sales are almost exclusively destined to China.
