Barley news France: Winter barley harvest finished, spring progressing fast

France’s winter barley harvest is finished with disappointing yields, AGRESTE puts the crop at 7.8 mln tonnes, 1.45 mln tonnes less than last year. Quality parameters are good, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their August report.

As of early August, the spring barley harvest has advanced from 100% in the southwest and centre to 80% in the Champagne and Burgundy to 40-50% in the north and “grand est”. Yields are below average in most regions, screenings good, proteins in the range of 10.5 – 11% except for Burgundy and the east with a range up to 12%.

There is a calm domestic market, but good activities on the export side. Farmers are stubbornly withholding their crops from the market, the analysts said.
