Brewing news USA, TX: The Tomball Economic Development approves architectural plans for a new brewery

The Tomball Economic Development Corporation unanimously approved architectural plans for a brewery and eatery planned to be built in the Tomball Business and Technology Park, the Houston Chronicle reported on June 9.

Kelly Violette, TEDC executive director, said TEDC is under contract to sell a lot in the park to a company for the project, dubbed “Project Standard,” as they are under a confidentiality agreement with the buyer. The project entails the construction of a 10,500-square-foot brewery and restaurant facility on 4.6 acres of land, located parallel to South Persimmon Street. Board members voted on the plans during their May 28 meeting.

The brewery includes two grain silos and a modern-designed building with a glass wall inside, allowing people to see the brewery equipment and operations inside, Violette said. Plans also include an outdoor beer garden. The brewery is being designed by Ziegler Cooper Architects.

“I think a good way to look at this is we want to create a really nice experience for visitors to the brewery,” Chandler Johnson, an architect with Ziegler Cooper Architects, said. “When someone steps out of the car, we want them to immediately feel like they’re in an elevated, unique kind of space.”

Steve Lucchesi, senior principal Ziegler Cooper Architects, said the long-term intent of the brewery would be to expand on the property, developing the interior courtyard to act as an amenity for future restaurant space and building development in the park.

Violette said the brewery was different from the design of other buildings in the park but didn’t think it was a bad thing.

“I think that’s something that will continue to be a draw,” Violette said. “I definitely think it’s a quality design and it’s not your type of off-the-shelf metal building.”

The plans will still need to be approved by the Tomball City Council before they can move forward, but Council Member Chad Degges and Mayor Gretchen Fagan, who are on the TEDC board, both approved of the designs. Council members will vote on the plans during their June 15 board meeting.

“I think it’s a gorgeous building,” Fagan said.

Violette said she didn’t believe the company behind the brewery had set a target date yet for when it will open.
