Barley news EU: Barley exports surplus forecast at up to 2.5 mln tonnes

The EU’s barley exports surplus in 2019/20 is forecast at around 2.375-2.5 mln tonnes, with France traditionally accounting for the majority of the volume, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their November report.

When we deduct the barley shortage volumes in the EU nations, this leaves a theoretical surplus for exports to third countries of 750 thousand tonnes of winter and 550 – 675 thousand tonnes of spring barley. In case of good demand from abroad better malting barley premiums in France and Denmark could provide for additional supplies.

The UK had shipped 200-300 thousand tonnes of malting barley by the end of October. The extension of the Brexit period till January 31, 2020 will enable British shippers to export up to a total of 400 - 600 thousand tonnes to the continent, the Gauger analysts believe.
