Barley news Ukraine: Winter barley harvest could rise to 3.3 mln tonnes this year

Ukraine’s 2019 winter wheat harvest is likely to rise 8.4 percent to 25.9 million tonnes due to a higher yield, APK-Inform consultancy said on May 28, citing state weather forecasters.

It said the winter barley harvest could rise to 3.3 million tonnes this year from 2.9 million tonnes a year earlier.

Analysts say the winter wheat yield could total 4.0 tonnes per hectare, while the yield for barley may be 3.3 tonnes. Last year, the winter wheat yield was 3.73 tonnes per hectare and winter barley was 3.35 tonnes.

Winter wheat dominates Ukrainian wheat harvest, accounting for more than 95 percent of the planted wheat area. Ukraine harvested a total of 24.6 million tonnes of wheat in 2018.

The agriculture ministry has said this year’s wheat harvest could total 26.9 million tonnes.
