Australia: Boortmalt looking to increase direct purchases of barley in Western Australia
One of the worlds leading maltsters, Boortmalt is looking to increase its direct purchases of barley from growers in Western Australia, RMI Analytics said in their late August report.
Even though such a practice is implemented in Eastern Australia, maltsters in Western Australia are still relying heavily on CBH Group, as the states dominant bulk handler.
The main driver of this approach is the need to focus on niche varieties, which are not always sought by the bulk handlers. These niche varieties provide different malt quality and processing efficiencies, supporting the capture of reduced costs and facilitate sustainability targets and initiatives.
According to the RMI analysts, with strong exports expected to continue from Western Australia, domestic maltsters are adapting to the market.
