Australia: Barley production of up to 13 mln tonnes deemed possible in 2021/22
Australias barley production 2021/22 was forecast at 12.477 mln tonnes in ABARESs September report, down from the 13.093 mln harvested in 2020/21.
According to H. M. Gauger GmbHs October report, private estimates deem a crop of 13 mln tonnes possible, in spite of some recent frost damage in Western Australia. In its September estimate, GIWA put the WA barley crop at 5 mln tonnes.
Since the closure of the Chinese market Australia has successfully developed new markets for malting barley in Mexico and Peru, and for feed barley in Thailand and Vietnam. Shipments in January-July were 325,000 tonnes of malting and almost 5 mln tonnes of feed barley.
In view of low malting barley supplies in the world, Australian export markets in 2021/22 could possibly include - besides South America - also Canada, the US, and the EU.
