Barley news Canada: Barley crop forecast slightly down to 8 mln tonnes

Further rain across western Canada and the US is supporting final barley crop development. For Canada, RMI Analytics’ barley crop estimate is down slightly (-0.2 mln) to 8.0 mln tonnes, on lower planted area expectations and the yield impacts from the earlier hot/dry conditions.

Domestic maltster and exporter demand remains limited for malting barley, the analysts said in their late July report.

With harvest still several weeks away, price levels are unchanged. Farmer selling remains limited as further barley crop development following much-needed rain is awaited. Pressured by cheaper US corn imports, domestic feed barley values are continuing to decline.
