Brewing news Tanzania: Tanzania Breweries Limited launches beer brewed from sorghum

Tanzania has become the fourth country in Africa to brew beer from sorghum after the Tanzania Breweries Limited started marketing its new brand of Eagle Lager over the weekend, Xinhua reported May 8.

The company expects to use 13,500 tons of sorghum over the next few years to brew sorghum beer.

The beer brewed from sorghum is being sold at a lower price, 800 Tanzanian shillings (64 U.S. cents) for a 500-ml returnable bottle.

The price is 15.8 percent lower than regular beer in the same capacity container, according to the company's public relations office.

Uganda is the first African country to brew beer from sorghum. It was followed by Zimbabwe and Zambia.
