France: Per capita beer consumption, number of breweries grow in France
Frances per capita beer consumption increased to 32 litres last year from 30 litres four years ago, Le Figaro reported on March 16.
Although the figure is below the average 70 litres per capita consumed in the European Union (and is far behind the Czech Republics 143 and Germanys 106 litres), the habits are gradually changing, French Brewers Associations Maxime Costilhes says.
A growing demand for craft beer is expected to result in double sales of the category between 2016 and 2020. The sector is estimated to have been worth more than EUR300 mln in 2018 and is expected to show an annual growth of around 20%, reaching EUR440 mln next year, or 7% of the overall beer market in France.
According to Costilhes, a new brewery opens in France every three days. In 2006, there were only 246 breweries in the country, whereas last year their number reached 1,100.
