Germany: Official estimate shows increase in both Germanys winter and spring barley production
The first official crop estimate puts Germanys winter barley at 9.0 mln tonnes, (last year 8.96); spring barley at 1.91 mln tonnes, (1.77), H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their September report.
Two thirds of the German malting barley are grown in the south and southwest, where spring barley was affected by a long period and hot and dry weather, followed by heavy rains just before and during harvest. Yields are low, proteins range well above 11.5%, large quantities even above 13%. The amount of sprouted barley is dangerously high. The risk is that it may be blended with sound barley.
Germany produced almost 100,000 tonnes of 2-row winter malting barley, which will certainly be used. The industry needs approx. 2.4 mln tonnes of malting barley, of which 250 300,000 tonnes of winter barley. The final selection of spring barley remains to be seen, trade estimates are that +/- 1.2 mln tonnes must be imported.
