Barley news Scandinavia: Rain endangers malting barley crop in Denmark and Sweden, Finland managed to get reasonable quantities under roof

Barley fields were left alone in the rain since August 11, H. Abildstrom & Co ApS released in its Scandinavian Malting Barley Report No/08 of August 16.

Farmers left in hope and fear, watching daily weather forecasts and unfortunately only a few dry intervals to be seen for the next week in Denmark and Sweden whereas Finland has had different weather patterns and managed to get reasonable quantities and qualities under roof.

They are harvesting August 16 whilst Denmark and Sweden need minimum 2 dry days being able to commence. Since August 11, 100 – 160 mm of rain fell on the regions. The fear goes on pre germination which could appear due to humidity and above 22 degrees C in the daytime.

In Denmark, crop was 98% harvested in Lolland/Falster region, 50-60% in Zealand-Fyn, 40% in East Jutland and only 30% in North Jutland. In South Sweden, malting barley was yielded from 40% of the harvested areas in East and North, 40% in South and West. Malting barley started to be yielded in Mid Sweden and the harvesting campaign progressed to 40% in O. Goetland, 35% in W. Goetland and only 10% in Lake Maelaren. In the South West region of Finland malting barley was cropped from 35-40% of the yielded areas and 70% in Central south (yields minus 1 t/ha, moist 15-16, protein 11-12.5, screenings 92, kg/hl 69).

After months of dullness too much bad news are creating extremely nervous and unstable market conditions. Danish first hand offers are so far practically non-existent. Sweden might offer a few cargoes with high protein but in principle is also waiting to see the balance of the crop cut and to analyse it.

Business is taking place but only individual, protein and price relations are negotiated to an end and kept confidential. Finland according to latest info is likely to be self-sufficient with only a few opportunities for export. Finnish maltsters might accept upto 12.5 protein (as they have done before) thereby opening for sufficient volumes of crop 2006
