Barley news Australia: ABB Grain Ltd barley pool estimates remain unchanged (South Australia, Victoria, East Coast)

ABB Grain Ltd has reviewed its gross barley pool indicators for both 2005/2006 and new season barley (2006/2007) and has left its estimates unchanged, the company released August 10.

ABB Grain’s General Manager Marketing, Nigel Officer, said the approaching spring season had become critical for development of the Australian barley crop and what was available to sell in the world market.

“While the feed barley situation and outlook remains relatively unchanged for new crop, there are still positive signs for current malting barley,” Mr Officer said.

“As previously noted, because of the very hot weather that’s been experienced in North America, malting barley supplies will be under pressure; it’s expected there will be reduced export ability for malting barley from Canada. Extremely hot conditions have also been experienced in Europe.

“European Union malting barley will continue to be uncompetitive in China (our largest malting barley market) due to strong EU market values and a tight supply/demand scenario in Europe.”

Gross estimates for last season’s and new season’s barley are as follows:

South Australian pools
2005/2006 season (figures in AU$)
No. 1 malting (closed January 24) - $188/tonne
No.1 feed (closed January 24) - $163/tonne
No.2 malting (opened January 24) - $170/tonne
No.2 feed (opened January 24) - $150/tonne

2006/2007 season
No.1 malting - $189/tonne
No.1 feed - $166/tonne

Victorian pools
No. 1 malting (closed October 31, 2005) - $193/tonne
No.1 feed (closed October 31, 2005) - $168/tonne

East Coast (Vic, NSW & Qld)
No.2 malting (closed January 24) - $188/tonne
No.2 feed (closed January 24) - $163/tonne
No.3 malting (opened January 24) - $170/tonne
No.3 feed (opened January 24) - $150/tonne

A $5/t premium also applies to Baudin and Sloop malting varieties for 2005/2006, for the final time.
