Barley news USA: Idaho Barley prices increased

Idaho barley prices were higher in southern Idaho ranging from unchanged to 20 cents higher and also in northern Idaho ranging from 8 cents to 10 cents higher, Idaho Barley Commission posted on March 9.

USDA export sales report showed exports of 5.1 TMT going to Israel, Mexico and Canada. Barley export sales were 22.2 TMT for Canada and Israel—the first activity for Israel since the 1996/97 marketing year.

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, barley production in Idaho in 2005 totaled 52.2 million bushels from 600,000 harvested acres, down 13 percent from last year's production. The average yield of 87.0 bushels per acre was down 5 bushels from 2004.

The total value of 2005 barley production in Idaho is estimated at $151 million, down 16 percent from 2004. The decline in barley values was due to a combination of lower prices and decreased production from 2004.
