Japan: First Simultaneous Buy Sell feed barley tender of 2006 will be issued soon
Japans first Simultaneous Buy Sell (SBS) feed barley tender of 2006 will be issued on March 15, according to an announcement from Japans Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
The announcement on Wednesday, March 1, set the first tender at 240,000 metric tons (11 million bushels). MAFF stated that five tenders will be made in 2006, totaling 1.1 million tons (50.5 million bushels) of barley, an increase of 100,000 tons (4.59 million bushels) compared to 2005.
The announcement supports earlier reports that nearly 100 percent of barley exports to Japan would be conducted within the SBS system as Japan imported 1.147 million tons of barley last year. The SBS system has accounted for a steadily increasing percentage of Japanese barley imports since 1999 when 360,000 metric tons were imported under the SBS system.
