Barley news Ukraine: 50% of winter barley will have to be re-seeded

Some 50% of winter barley and over 30% of winter wheat in Ukraine will have to be re-seeded, head of agro-meteorological department at Ukrainian weather centre Tetyana Adamenko said to media on February 17, according to APK Inform.

The conclusion has been made after obtaining monolith growing tests of the plant samples, taken from fields after the first wave of frosts on January 27.

The winter barley in Ukraine was killed at 35-55 %, in the south districts of the region - up to 80 %. In the Zaporozhye area the majority of winter crops are viable at 88-96 %. It is necessary to reseed about 30 % of barley. The total area with the lost winter barley crops makes about 110,000 ha.

Feed barley prices went up to some degree a week before owing to that same notorious technical factor. Contract closing made prices surge up to UAH 715/MT СРТ. However, bargains concentrated within UAH 700-710/MT СРТ toward the weekend. According to analysts, this range will keep further as an operational one. The reason consists in restrained barley supply from farms. Besides, if peasants get crop subsidies, this will allow them to hold back their liquid barley until best times, as they believe. Much better times in price terms are hardly likely to come, though prices on C&F Saudi Arabia grew to $155/MT.

Market experts suppose that prices for feed barley, unlike all other crops, will not rise considerably. Saudi Arabia declares its demand at $155/MT. This does not provide any significant gap for a rise in Ukrainian barley prices. Besides, it should be taken into account that German barley prices have already almost come into line with Ukrainian ones and Australia has already come to the global market with its rich crop.

The barley export volume insignificantly decreased in January compared to December, amounting just to 224.KMT (266.5KMT).
