Barley news Canada: Canadian barley crop is down, however barley shipments to China increased

The quality of this year's Canadian barley crop may be down, according to market analysts. However, this has not affected the malting barley sales to China, reports Farm Assist Canada communicated on December 12.

The shipping schedule of the Canadian Port Clearance Association has about 151,000 tonnes of two-row malt quality barley earmarked for China between now and the middle of December, an export source commented.

Canada sold 678,000 tonnes of malting barley to China during the 2004-2005 market year. No estimate is available on the expected size of this year's exports, although Canadian Wheat Board spokesperson Maureen Fitzhenry said China's import demand for calendar year 2006 has been forecast at roughly 2.3 million tonnes. Fitzhenry added the CWB is currently trying to move as much product to China as possible before the Australian malt barley crop becomes available in January.

A western analyst estimated that Canada produced roughly 2 million to 2.5 million tonnes of malt quality barley this year, most of which will be used in the domestic market. "Of that 2 million to 2.5 million tonnes, about 750,000 tonnes will be for the export market," he said.
