Brewing news UK: The British Beer and Pub Association welcomes Christmas Drink Drive campaign

Welcoming the launch of the Government’s Christmas drink drive campaign, BBPA Director of Communications, Mark Hastings, said on December 1:

“The Government’s campaign has our full support, as there is one clear message for everyone this Christmas - if you are having a drink – don’t drive. It is as simple as that.

“We should welcome the fact that we have one of the lowest rates of drink drive related injuries and deaths in Europe, but we must go further.

“We call for random breath testing to be introduced, as we need to ensure that our tough drink drive laws are rigorously enforced, and the number of offenders falls.

“Enjoy this season of celebration, but leave the car at home if you are drinking.”

Thousands of pubs across the country are also participating in the industry-backed ‘I’ll be Des’ campaign. The publicity and promotion around the scheme is now reaching millions of pub goers across the country.

Mark Hastings adds: “If you are going out with a group of friends, agree beforehand who is driving – and that they are not drinking. Don’t drink at all if you are the designated driver – or leave the car at home.”

The British Beer and Pub Association is the UK’s leading organisation representing the brewing and pub sector. Its members account for 98% of the beer brewed in the UK and own nearly two thirds of Britain’s 59,000 pubs.
