Germany: Beer makers tap into the female market with a beer surpassing aspirin
Beer makers in Germany have devised a new way of tapping into the female market by producing a beer called "Karla", which according to their claims, does everything from calming the mind to preventing cancer, according to the Newindpress of November 28.
The beer makers claim that the beer is not only good for health as it is not only made of herbs and hops, but also contains health boosting ingrediants like folic acid, lecithin soya extract and vitamins. Besides this, the beer also has the added quality of having a low alcohol percentage.
The beer makers have been so convincing, that chemists in Saarland have already taken to stocking thier shelves with the "frauenber" i.e. the ladies' beer. The beer also seems to be growing in popularity as chemists say that the drink has started to outsell even aspirin, and that customers have also started buying it in place of sleeping pills.
Chemist Adreas Kugler said that sometimes the sales of the "Karla" beer is higher than the sales of aspirin." On some days I sell more beer than aspirin," the Telegraph quoted him, as saying.
However, medical experts such as Rolf H|llinghorst, head of the German Centre for Addiction Queries, maintained that beer is not a "health" drink, and said that chemists should not under any circumstances stock the drink. He said that this would only add to alcoholism as people would think that drinking beer is healthy.
"Beer is not healthy and has no place in the chemist. Now everyone can say 'my beer consumption is not serious, after all you can buy it in the chemist'," he said.
In the meantime, another "health beer" named 'Xan', manufactured by the Bavarian brewery, Weihanstephan, is also finding its way to the shelves in chemists with its claims to stop cancer because of its high content of the anti-oxidant,xanthohumol. The anti-inflammatory properties of xanthohumol also claim to relieve not only heart problems and osteoporosis but also malaria.
