Australia: Barley production is forecast to increase by 31% in 2005-06, according to ABARE
Barley production is forecast by ABARE to increase significantly to 8.4 million tonnes in 2005-2006, reflecting an increase in yields as a result of the favourable conditions during crop maturation, Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) published in its Crop Report on November 29. Barley is the hardier of the broadacre crops and less vulnerable to severe changes in seasonal conditions. With the late break to the season, an increased area was sown to barley in place of crops such as canola. Canola production in 2005-06 is forecast to be 1.3 million tonnes, around 12 per cent less than in 2004-05.
New South Wales
In 2005-06, barley production in New South Wales is expected to increase by 25 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes, largely from a 2 per cent increase in the area planted and ideal growing conditions throughout many districts in southern and central New South Wales.
Victoria
The area planted to barley in Victoria is estimated to have increased by 7 per cent in 2005-06.
Production is forecast to reach 1.7 million tonnes in 2005-06, 55 per cent more than in the previous year.
Queensland
Expectations for barley in Queensland have improved considerably throughout the year, with production now forecast to increase to 245 000 tonnes. While yields are forecast to be 15 per cent lower than the record levels achieved in 2004-05, they are not expected to fall as much as wheat yields. A higher proportion of Queensland’s barley crop has been planted in the western Downs/Maranoa regions where conditions have been average to above average.
Western Australia
With the area planted to barley in Western Australia estimated to be the third largest, and yields estimated to be the second highest on record, total barley production in Western Australia is estimated to be a record 2.4 million tonnes. In the southern parts of the grains belt there are some concerns with discoloration of the barley and this may result in discount prices being paid for barley in these areas.
South Australia
While the area sown to barley is estimated to be similar to that of last season at around 1.1 million hectares, production is forecast to reach 2.5 million tonnes in 2005-06, 41 per cent higher than in the previous year.
