News from e-malt EU: Analysts abut malt market

- Has the EU malting industry a chance to recover from the present crisis? The fastest, but very unpleasant way would be massive closures of capacities, as consequences of management decisions, mergers or acquisitions, insolvencies.

- Malt demand will grow in the world, as per Plato beer output will rise 27 % by 2015. The positive effect will be limited and late for EU maltsters.

- A successful Doha Round of the WTO may reduce tariff barriers and may even cause shutdowns of malthouses in tropical and subtropical regions.

- The reorganization of agriculture in the larger, denationalized Single EU market will move barley growing northwards. The predicted warming of our climate may speed up that process. Malting industries may slowly disappear along the Mediterranean coast and in the Balkans.
