News from e-malt Switzerland: Beer consumption decreased by about 19% in the last 14 years

Swiss breweries produced about 3.56 million hl of beer directed to domestic market in 2004 that is a 2.9% fall compared to 3.67 million hl of beer produced in 2003 (exports excluded), according to the brewers association of Switzerland, Schweizerischer Bierbrauerverein. Last year the leading Swiss beer makers were: Feldschlösschengruppe (Carlsberg) with 42% of beer market share and Calanda - Haldengut (Heineken) with 17%. Other three regional brewers accounted for 14% of the market, 20 small breweries for 10% and 100 micronreweries/brewpubs for 1%.

Schweizerischer Bierbrauerverein posted that beer consumption in Switzerland decreased by 1.7% from 4.33 million hl in 2003 to 4.26 million hl in 2004. Per capita beer consumption in 2004 dropped by 19.3% compared to the figure registered in 1991 from 71 litres to 57.3 litres.
