Bulgaria: According to the estimations of Bulgarian analysts, the total domestic consumption of barley (seeds, malting, feed) must be at 60 thousand metric tonnes. This leaves 353 thousand metric tonnes of 2004-harvest barley available for export, Black See Grain News reported. Meanwhile, total barley export is greater than the calculations by 31 thousand metric tonnes being at 387 thousand metric tonnes by early April 2005. According to experts, this happened due to shrinking domestic consumption as total barley stocks available at elevators amount to 24 thousand metric tonnes.

According to Agriculture and Forestry Ministry of Bulgaria, winter areas will generate good harvest in the 2005. Total area of winter crops is 1301 thousand ha, incl. 1070 thousand ha under winter wheat and 231 thousand ha with winter barley.
