Brewing news Germany: Paulaner to purchase production site from Hatz-Moninger Brauhaus in south-western Germany

Paulaner Brauerei has struck a deal to purchase a production site from Hatz-Moninger Brauhaus in Germany, the company said on February 3.

The financial terms of the sale of the facility, which is based in Karlsruhe in south-western Germany, were not disclosed.

Paulaner’s local subsidiary Hoepfner will takeover operations at the site on 1 March, according to a statement. The brewery has been producing its beers in the Hoepfner Castle in Karlsruhe since 1798.

The acquisition is expected to enable Paulaner to “expand its market position and strengthen its production site in Karlsruhe”, the statement read.

Paulaner CEO Jörg Biebernick said the news of the purchase comes as demand for its drinks such as Paulaner Spezi grows.

Biebernick said the company “is investing prudently and strategically in attractive production sites to enable sustainable growth”.

He added: “The Grünwinkel site in Karlsruhe offers the Group good conditions for the further expansion of a strong network for the future thanks to its infrastructure and location.”

Hatz-Moninger will continue to brew its beers at the Grünwinkel location through a contract brewing arrangement.

All jobs are expected to be retained at the site following the takeover.

“The Hoepfner brewery has always been closely associated with this traditional location in the castle and the city of Karlsruhe. We are delighted about the additional opportunities and would like to thank the Scheidtweiler family for their trust,” Dirk Steinebach, the managing director of Privatbrauerei Hoepfner, said.

As part of the transaction, drinks supplier Residenz Getränke Zentrum which will be acquired by Paulaner’s subsidiary Fritz Bierhalter, which supplies the catering industry.

Hatz-Moninger managing director Dorothee Scheidtweiler said the deal allows the company to construct a new brewery “that is perfectly tailored to our size and, at the same time, [to] know that our current production site, which is far too large for us, and above all the employees who work there, are in the best hands”.

She added Paulaner would be brewing the group’s beers at the Grünwinkel location “until our new brewery is completed”.
