Hops news Spain: Hop imports shrink to 400 tonnes in 2024

In 2024, imports of hops into Spain contracted markedly to 400 tonnes, which is down by -39.9% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern, IndexBox reported on February 3.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 687 tonnes in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hop imports shrank dramatically to $6.6M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $10M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2024, Germany (327 tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of hop to Spain, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, hop imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (47 tonnes), sevenfold. The Netherlands (6.2 tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.5% share. From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+38.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+91.7% per year).
