Malting news Ireland: Boortmalt to start expansion works at its Kildare malthouse this month

Boortmalt has announced a significant expansion of its Minch Malt production facility at its Kildare plant. This expansion is set to increase the Athy plant’s capacity by 20,000MT, enabling the company to better serve its growing customer demand and meet the rising demand for premium Irish malt products, Kildare Nationalist reported on November 12.

The expansion project, which represents a multi-million euro investment, will include the addition of state-of-the-art malting equipment along with enhanced processing capabilities. Construction is scheduled to begin this month with completion expected by late 2025.

The Minch Malt plant currently works with Irish growers to source over 180,000MT of Irish barley creating added value for the Irish agri-food sector with this premium crop. This expansion will take our annual requirement to >200,000MT of high-quality malting barley.

“Since 2020, we have focused much on the successful integration of Cargill malt at the global level. As a group, we are now in shape to develop our footprint further in strategic markets such as Ireland,” said Yvan Schaepman, Group CEO of Boortmalt. “This expansion paves the way for subsequent ones and demonstrates our commitment to our Irish suppliers and customers.” “We are thrilled to embark on this exciting new chapter for Minch Malt” said Stuart Sands, MD of Boortmalt Ireland. “This expansion will not only allow us to increase our production capacity but drive forward operational efficiencies helping to achieve our sustainability objectives.”

Boortmalt is a global malting company with a production capacity of 3.1 million tonnes. The group is present on 5 continents with 27 malting plants.
