Barley news EU & UK: France, Denmark, UK barley prices bounce slightly up

In France, as the winter barley harvest results verify fears about yield reductions due to wet weather, prices have bounced slightly. Farmers’ disappointment in yields is adding to their lack of interest in selling while they are busy with harvest activity. Variable (generally higher) proteins from the lower yields and the wet season will need to be managed, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

Spring harvest is now starting on the autumn sown crop, and results are expected to be an improvement over winter barley, with normal proteins. Then in 7-10 days, spring-sown 2RS harvest is set to advance, and is expected to be a further improvement in terms of yield.
Prices in both Denmark and the UK are up in step with France, on the confirmed yield drop for 6RW. Crops look OK in both regions, Denmark and Sweden could use one last rain before a mid-August harvest, which is highly awaited after the crop’23 challenges. UK maltsters are well covered, and activity is slow. Farmers in both regions are not active sellers, and the access to storage makes it unlikely farmers ‘need’ to sell at harvest.
