Barley news EU & UK: French, UK, Scandinavian barley prices all down overall

According to RMI Analytics’ latest report, French malting barley prices are down overall, led by a number of factors:

Weakness in the Creil two-row spring prices which is an indication of weak domestic maltster demand and a slower export trade;

Mosel prices are steadier which indicates the German market is balanced for the moment, with beer sales sharply lower in August;

France and Danish barley supply should fulfil German import requirements;

The continued high malting barley premium is helping to retain as much barley as possible for malting purposes.

In USD terms, prices are down to a further extent and improve slightly the competitiveness of Europe in global markets.

UK and Scandinavian markets are down slightly as well, following the direction of French prices. The early pace of UK barley exports is slow (so far) but this is partially offset by relatively good domestic maltster demand for barley and it appears the UK’s malt demand is better than the continent’s at this stage. In Sweden and Denmark, there are quality challenges to manage but the market has calmed, now that harvest is fully completed.
