Brewing news Romania: Beer sales drop by 9% in January-May

The volume of beer sales in Romania fell by an annual 9% in the first five months of 2023, mainly due to a drop in people's purchasing power and a difficult economic context, the Brewers of Romania Association said on July 11.

The rise in beer production costs too is impacting sales, even though other costs, such as those associated with electricity, have stabilised, the Brewers of Romania Association said in a press release.

Beer excise duty increased by 20% from August 1, 2022, and by a further 6% from January 1, the association recalled.

The beer industry in Romania directly and indirectly supports some 60,000 jobs, bringing contributions of 530 million euro ($582.2 million) to the state budget each year, it added.
