Barley news EU & UK: Analysts lower barley crop forecast due to hot and dry weather in June

RMI Analytics’ barley crop 2023 forecast for the EU + UK has been lowered to 55.08 mln tonnes, down nearly 1 mln tonnes from the previous report issued at the end of June.

The primary impact has been the hot/dry weather over the past month, which is expected to reduce yields (those of spring barley in particular).

France should experience favourable weather over the next week as harvest advances, the analysts said.

Early Russian wheat yield results show an about 10% drop from 2022.

Weather remains the key focus as the malting barley harvest advances in Europe. Positive (as expected) early six-row winter varieties results provide some market stability, but the key unanswered questions surround two-row spring barley. Autumn-sown two-row spring results show good yield but lower sizing, attributed to high plant populations and the impact from heat in June. Very early results of two-row spring, sown in spring, is surprisingly OK (so far), it is reported.
