Mercosur: The crop of malting barley is large and of excellent quality, albeit with fairly low protein contents. Plumpness, moisture, germination and outer appearance are first class. Crops are estimated 370,000 tonnes in Brazil, 350,000 tonnes in Uruguay and 800,000 tonnes in Argentina. Due to growing contracts and long-term agreements, 150,000-200,000 tonnes will move across borders inside Mercosur. It leaves a surplus for third countries of 300-350,000 tonnes, most of it from Argentina, but smaller quantities also from Brazil and Uruguay. Price levels are indicated in the range of US$ 140-150 FOB.
