Barley news North America: Canada barley area may increase despite planting delays

Planting delays add a layer of concern for the later maturation of the barley crop in Canada, but barley area may increase at the expense of other crops, RMI Analytics said in their latest report earlier in June.

Production forecast for Canada remains at 9.7 mln tonnes, with some upside potential as rains this week are improving crop prospects in Central Alberta, and lateness in seeding may shift further area into barley. As supply rebounds, export and domestic demand keeps ending stocks at very tight levels.

In the USA, barley production is rebounding in 2022 to 3.6 mln tonnes (other forecasts are higher) due to extreme Us Midwest wet conditions reducing area.

Across North America, demand for early delivery at harvest will be intense as maltsters and grain companies look to replenish the pipeline following the drought of 2021. In addition to strong shipments, farmers can expect to see a strong malting barley premium structure as the trade pushes for malting barley selections. Dryness in southern Alberta caused poor germination to seeded barley and may require replanting.
