North America: Wet weather continues to impact barley planting in Canada and US Midwest
Wet weather continues to impact planting across Canada and the northern US Midwest, RMI Analytics said in their latest report at the end of May.
In April, the Winnipeg area received 120 mm of rain versus 30 mm normally. Further rain is forecast, which addresses drier regions but slows again farmer seeding in wetter areas.
In Canada, barley seeding is 40% finished versus 55% normal. this leaves a mixed result, moisture is needed but seeding timelines are behind normal, which pushes crop maturity into the higher summer heat. RMIs production estimate for barley in Canada drops to 9.3 mln tonnes mainly due to these seeding delays.
