Europe: Weather benign for winter barley, spring plantings still a few weeks away
Early plantings of spring barley have been reported from south-east England, but that will remain an exception for some time to come, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their February report.
Winter weather has been benign for winter grains to-date, and spring planting is still a few weeks away in most countries of the continent.
The acres of spring barley are expected almost unchanged in the malting barley countries, the hope is for better yields than in 2021, in spite of the dangerous climate change.
For EU-27, Coceral forecasts a barley acreage of 10.7 mln ha vs. 10.6 mln in 2021, of which spring barley 6.2 mln ha, last year 6.05 mln ha (100 thousand ha more in Spain).
The U.K. acreage will be virtually unchanged, all barley 1.15 mln ha, spring barley at 0.785 mln ha.
