Australia: Estimates confirm record barley crop of up to 14.2 mln tonnes
State and private estimates confirm a record barley crop of 14.0-14.2 mln tonnes in Australia, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.
Western Australia is the largest barley producer by far, GIWA puts the crop number at 5.6 mln tonnes. The other estimates are: New South Wales 3.2 mln tonnes, Victoria 2.3-2.4 mln tonnes, South Australia 2.3–2.4 mln tonnes, Queensland 0.5 mln tonnes.
Weather conditions provided for large yields in the east, both yields and qualities in the west.
In the crop year 2020/21. malting barley exports of 630 thousand tonnes went to East Africa, Central and South America; the No. 1 destination Mexico acquired 235 thousand tonnes (their import duty dropped from 15% to zero on Jan 1st of this year). Reports are that two cargoes of Western Australia malting barley are sold to Canada for shipment June.
Feed barley shipments in January-November 2021 totalled close to 7.0 mln tonnes, of which 2.8 mln to Saudi Arabia, 1.0 mln to Japan, and 1.6 mln tonnes to the newly developed markets of South East Asia.
Exhausted barley supplies of Europe and North America point to continued large Australian barley exports throughout the year; however, shipment slots are tight during the first semester of this year.
