United Kingdom: Barley crop forecast at about 7.3 mln tonnes with malting selection at about 1.75 mln

The UK anticipates a total barley crop of 7.3 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their July report.

Spring barley production is forecast at 4.5 mln tonnes, the selection for malting could amount to 1.75 mln.

Demand for malting barley dropped from 1.6 mln tonnes in 2019 to 1.45 mln in 2020. It is expected to return to its regular level in 2021/22, the analysts said.

The export surplus of malting barley will be around 250 - 400 thousand tonnes. British barley export statistics for July/April 2020/21 is: 963 thousand tonnes to the EU, 234 thousand tonnes to other countries, mainly North Africa. Market activities are small, both farmers and industries are waiting for the harvest.
