Brewing news USA, AZ: Pedal Haus opening new brewery in downtown Chandler

Award-winning Tempe brewery Pedal Haus is opening a new location in downtown Chandler in 2020, AZCentral.com reported on December 20.

The space currently houses Las Palmas Cantina, a Mexican-style restaurant and bar set to close at the end of the year. The location was previously slated to be transformed into a new concept called Chandler Yacht Club but that project was canceled before it had a chance to open.

While the liquor license for the space is still under the Yacht Club name, owner Julian Wright told The Arizona Republic the location will soon reopen as the first outpost of the Tempe brewery and pub, serving a similar food menu and all of Pedal Haus' beers.

The new Pedal Haus location is scheduled to open in on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2020. A grand opening celebration is set for March 6-8.

Pedal Haus is the only brewery on Mill Avenue — and it's hard to miss. If the large brew tanks don't intrigue passers-by, then the enormous front patio complete with games, misters and bicycle-themed decor certainly might.

Since opening four years ago, Pedal Haus has established itself as a brewing powerhouse winning multiple international awards for its beer including a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2018 and Best Brewery in The United States at the 2019 Copa Cerveza de Americas.

Head brewer Derek "Doc" Osborne is the man behind the beer, which accompanies the pub's unique fare including a cold noodle salad and multiple vegan options. The restaurant, of course, also serves burgers and bar classics to enjoy with a cold pint.

The new Chandler location will serve a very similar menu, Wright says.

Although Wright has opened many restaurants during his tenure in Phoenix, including Ted's Refreshments also on Mill Avenue, this is the first expansion of the popular brewery. All beer will continue to be brewed at the Tempe location and brought to the outpost in Chandler.

There also may be more locations coming in the future, Wright says.

Las Palmas Cantina, which serves Mexican-coastal cuisine, opened in 2018. After a short run, Wright announced plans to close the restaurant and replace it with a similar, yet more upbeat and fun version dubbed Chandler Yacht Club.

The Yacht Club was set to feature some of the same menu options and cocktails but with more of a party vibe as compared to a more serious, sit-down restaurant.

Las Palmas is scheduled to close at the end of the year, after a blow-out "drink-the-bar-dry" party on New Year's Eve.

The location will then be closed for about six weeks while it's transformed into the new Pedal Haus. The restaurant will include a large covered patio and decor similar to the original in Tempe.

Brewers are creating a special beer to celebrate the opening. All proceeds from the beer, a salted nut brown ale selling for $6 a pint, will go to Chandler-area charities.

Wright is excited about adding a brewery to Chandler's growing beer scene, he says. Chandler currently is home to Flix Brewhouse, QuartHaus, SanTan Brewing and the Perch Brewery.

"Pedal Haus is perfect for Chandler and Chandler is perfect for Pedal Haus," Wright says.
