World: Malting barley supplies barley sufficient in the EU, uncertain in Canada, Argentina, Australia
Malting barley supplies are barely sufficient in the EU, sizeable usage of lower quality barley will be necessary to survive a poor crop year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in December.
The final selection of malting barley is still uncertain in Canada, Argentina and Australia, but domestic supplies are fully secured.
The greatest problem will be the Chinese situation. Estimates are that they purchased 0.8 mln tonnes of Canadian and 1.2 mln tonnes of Australian malting barley. The threatening import tax situation will allow maximum shipments of 1.,0 mln tonnes from Australia for arrival before the January 19 deadline. It leaves China short of 1.2 1.5 mln tonnes of malting barley for 2019, unless the virtual ban on Australian barley is solved quickly.
